What is FindFile Chooser?
Under system 7.5, when the user chooses "Findﾉ" command from the "File" menu, the Finder launches an application called "FindFile" instead of searching by itself. This is done with help of FindFile Extension. This is a good idea, because it extends the Mac's file-searching ability.
The default application "FindFile" is not so bad. You can, however, also find many other great applications for file-searching, like File Buddyｪ, for instance. This application has much more powerful file-searching options. Moreover, you can search files not only by using its file information, but also its content - cool! There are lots of other file-searching applications. But how do you switch between numerous file-searching applications without fuss?
Enter FindFile Chooser. It is a control panel enabling you to choose between favorite find applications using the Finder's "Findﾉ" command.
NOTE: File Buddyｪ is a shareware written by Laurence Harris. It has many other functions besides powerful file searching. You can find the latest version of File Buddyｪ in major file archives.
How to install FindFile Chooser?
Drop the FindFile Chooser icon into the system folder. Finder will dispatch the icon to Control Panels folder. You may remove FindFile Extension in the Extensions folder, but FindFile Chooser must be loaded AFTER FindFile Extension. This is usually not a problem, but be careful if you are using other extension managers.
FindFile Chooser will run on any Macintosh with System 7.5 or later. To personalize FindFile Chooser, Macintosh Drag & Drop and Drag-Drop-aware word processor will be needed. By default, System 7.5 has Macintosh Drag & Drop built-in, and Note Pad in Apple Menu is Drag-Drop-aware. Please use that.
Using FindFile Chooser

1. Application Choose Button
Click this button to choose the application you want by using Standard Open File Dialog. You may only choose between application file or Finder.
TIPS: You can directly choose an application by drag & dropping the icon from Finder window into control panels window. Do not drag & drop directly onto FindFile Chooser's file icon.
2. Current Application
What the application currently uses for Finder's "Findﾉ" command. When the Finder icon appears, it means that old method will be used, i.e., Finder will search file.
3. Recently Used Application List
This list contains applications formerly used for FindFile Chooser. Clicking on an icon switches to that application. You can keep up to 5 applications here.
TIPS: You can remove an icon from the list by clicking on the icon while holding the option key.
4. Version and Owner Information
This shows current version of FindFile Chooser, and owner name. If this copy of FindFile Chooser has not been personalized yet, "UNREGISTERED" will be displayed.
Registration Information
FindFile Chooser is shareware; it is NOT free. If you decide to keep it, you must register by paying $10 (or more!) for each copy. Registrations for FindFile Chooser are handled by Kagi Shareware (shareware@kagi.com). You must use the accompanying Register program to make your payment. The Register program lets you pay with non-US currencies, credit cards, checks, virtual cash, etc. It also allows you to send your payment via fax or e-mail.
NOTE: If you are registered user of Laurence Harris's FileBuddyｪ, you will get special price for $5! Choose "FindFile Chooser for FileBuddy users" on Register application.
After you register, you will be sent instructions to personalize your copy of FindFile Chooser. A shareware notice will be displayed at startup once a week for unregistered copies.
IMPORTANT: To receive up-to-date information, you need to have an e-mail address that can be reached via Internet. Do not try to register if you don't have an Internet-reachable email address. I won't support people not connected. Sorry.
Please note that you do not get updates of FindFile Chooser or notification of new versions automatically. Instead, I will post updates on major Macintosh ftp sites and BBS libraries. Once you register, you remain registered for all future shareware versions of FindFile Chooser.
